Meet Godwin

Royal Promise has been discipling Godwin since we started our work in the community of Asikuma back in 2011. Recently, it was time for Godwin to make some decisions for his future, and he landed on attending a nearby vocational school to learn masonry/construction. Due to the impoverished situation of his family, Godwin would not have been able to attend this school without the sponsorship of Royal Promise covering his school fees.

Recently, Godwin invited us to his school so that he could show us everything about how the educational sponsorship from Royal Promise is helping him. As we jumped on the tro tro to head to his school, we met his mom at the roadside where she was selling snail. She handed him a small amount of money from her selling so he could buy some food items and told him to “manage it well”, as it would be awhile until she could send more.

Upon arrival to the campus, Godwin gave us a tour of the different classrooms for each of the departments. We met many teachers and staff members along the way, and it started to become very clear to us that Godwin has the favor of not only God but man resting on him. He is well spoken of and treated so favorably by all. We also made a pit stop in central campus where Godwin proudly showed us the public posting of his first term results, where he ranked 9th in his class (among all departments’ first year students).

Eventually, we made it to the hostel (like a dormitory) where Godwin lives with a handful of the other students. A main detail that stood out is that Godwin is responsible for cooking all of his own food. There is no cafeteria or dining hall. Just a coal pot and some friends to cook with!  Godwin also showed us a garden he had planted outside his hostel, and he said that he planted it not just for himself - but for all - so that everyone in his hostel can benefit from it.

After our tour on campus, Godwin wanted to go and purchase food items in the town that he would need for the week. There is also a small little shop on campus where a few meal ingredients can be purchased. Once we returned, Godwin and his friends got to work preparing all of us dinner - spaghetti!

All day long, as Godwin showed us around, it was clear to see how he has taken his sponsorship so seriously and has been faithful with what he has been entrusted with in this education. As we watched Godwin interact with faculty, friends, and those in the community, we were able to experience his selflessness, humbleness, purity, and see many evidences of his hardworking character. As evidence of this, not long after this visit, Godwin was selected to represent his department at the 48th anniversary celebration of the vocational institute, which took place in the capital city of Accra. Godwin was the only first year student to be selected as a representative for the school. It was quite the honor, and Godwin even received a speaking part at the celebration in which he had to prepare a speech!

Godwin is one of the numerous young men and women that are relying on Royal Promise for educational sponsorships. You can find a list of others who are awaiting sponsorships in order to be placed in high school or vocational schools here. When you donate to Royal Promise, these are the types of needs, situations, and lives that you are helping us to provide for.
